Bath Opera announces 2020 production

Discover the gripping story of Faust, a man hell bent upon winning his heart’s desires, stopping at no cost, not even his soul.

Against a background of civil war, a community steeped in tradition and challenged by technological changes, stage director Dave Key-Pugh sets this spectacular opera in the present day, somewhere in deepest Europe.

French composer Charles-François Gounod was one of the most popular French composers of the 19th century. He is probably best known for his Ave Maria, based on a work by Bach, but out of his 12 operas, Faust stands out as his supreme masterpiece.

Faust is an ageing scholar. Disappointed with life, he makes a deal with the devil. Lured into temptation by the enchanting Méphistophélès, he trades his morality for the earthly pleasures life has to offer.

However, Faust’s world begins to fall apart as he comes to realise that dealing with the devil is never as straightforward as it may first seem!
