When Così fan tutte was first produced in 1790 at Vienna’s Burgtheater, the composer also gave it the subtitle La scuola degli amanti (The School for Lovers). It’s usual title Così fan tutte, literally means ‘So do they all’, using the feminine plural (tutte) to indicate women. It is usually translated into English as ‘Women are like that’.
