Bath Opera is delighted to announce the cast of its forthcoming summer tour of La Traviata, which will be directed by John Clark, with accompaniment and musical direction by Dominic Irving.

Bath Opera Summer Tour

“Bath Opera presents a radical new present-day take on Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’ for its 2025 June-July tour.

To be convincing as a present-day setting, we have had to find a deeply conservative society where it is crucially important to a father in high society that his son must not marry an outsider – or his daughter’s marriage will itself be put at risk; and where the son’s beloved belongs to a group of women who are trapped in a honeypot of pleasure under the control of men.

So we have chosen for our setting the casino in a Middle East country.” Led by an international cast (Cecilia Zhang from China, and John Haque from Sweden), this saddest and most musical of Verdi’s operas will enthral, and is a worthy successor to last year’s acclaimed Don Giovanni, and previous years with ‘Tosca’, ‘The Barber of Seville’, and ‘The Marriage of Figaro’.

Here are the casting decisions of the audition panel for the summer tour of La
Traviata. The roles below are as named in the original score for easy recognition. In our production they will have different names to fit in with the setting.

– Violetta – Cecilia Zhang – except for 24th and 27th July when Mehreen Shah will sing the role
– Alfredo – John Haque
– Germont – David Palmer
– Flora – Bethan Maria Evans
– Annina – Mehreen Shah. When Mehreen sings Violetta (see above), Bethan
will sing Annina as well as Flora.
– Doctor (Marquis) – Neil Schofield, except for performances of July 12 th , 18 th ,
19 th when Erik Valverde will sing the role
– Baron Douphol. John Clark

Understudies.
o Mehreen will understudy Violetta (as well aa sing  2 performances)
o Bethan and Mehreen will understudy each other as Flora and Annina,
singing both roles if necessary (in different acts)
o David Wright will understudy the Doctor (Marquis)

  • Alexander Pinkstone will understudy Alfredo
