Mozart’s hilarious ‘Opera Buffa’ Così fan tutte was first performed in 1790 at the Burgtheater in Vienna, Austria. The libretto was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte and with whom Mozart also collaborated with The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni.

The subtitle for the opera is La scuola degli amanti (The School for Lovers), The short title, Così fan tutte, literally means ‘So do they all’ and is usually translated into English as ‘Women are like that’.
Interestingly, the subject-matter did not offend the Viennese sensibilities of the day. But by the 19th and early 20th centuries it was considered too risqué and even immoral and was consequently rarely performed. However, after World War II it’s popularity soared and it is now frequently performed as one the best loved operas in the repertoire.
