Governance and Policies

Below is a summary of Bath Opera’s key policies, outlining how we work and the standards we uphold as a community arts organisation.
Full policies are available on request from the Chair at chair.bathopera@hotmail.co.uk

Safeguarding

Bath Opera is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in our activities. Under‑18 performers participate only through a registered stage school, with qualified chaperones provided by the school. Concerns can be raised with the Chair, who serves as Designated Safeguarding Lead at chair.bathopera@hotmail.co.uk

Data Protection & Privacy (UK GDPR)

We protect personal information and comply with the UK GDPR. We use data only for appropriate purposes, including communication, rehearsals, volunteer management, and a single follow‑up after ticket purchases. We never sell data. Requests for access or deletion may be directed to the Secretary at secretary.bathopera@hotmail.co.uk

Health & Safety

We work in hired venues and conduct our own production risk assessments. We ensure safe rehearsal and performance environments, responsible set movement, clear emergency procedures, and incident reporting.

Accessibility

Bath Opera aims to ensure accessible participation and performances. We work with venues to provide wheelchair access, accessible toilets and disabled parking where possible. We offer information in alternative formats on request.

Environmental Responsibility

We reduce waste by reusing sets and costumes, sourcing locally where possible, reducing printing, and recycling responsibly. We continue seeking ways to minimise environmental impact.

Complaints Procedure

We aim to provide a positive experience for all. Complaints may be submitted to the Secretary at secretary.bathopera@hotmail.co.uk. We acknowledge messages promptly, respond within 21 days, and treat all concerns fairly and confidentially.

Volunteer & Member Code of Conduct

We expect respectful, professional behaviour from all volunteers and members. Our code covers communication, rehearsal etiquette, backstage conduct, and social media expectations. Volunteers receive an induction pack outlining general information including roles, expectations, and policies.

Financial Transparency

We manage our finances responsibly and in line with Charity Commission guidance. We maintain transparent annual accounts, use funds appropriately, and authorise payments—including honoraria—according to policy.

Risk Management

We proactively identify and manage risks relating to governance, finance, operations, safeguarding, and reputation. Trustees maintain a regularly reviewed Risk Register.

Governance & Constitution

Bath Opera is a volunteer‑run Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). We maintain strong governance, transparent decision‑making, and robust compliance with charity law. Our charitable purpose is to advance public education and appreciation of opera.

Trustee Induction & Oversight

New trustees receive an induction pack outlining roles, expectations, and policies. Trustees work collectively to ensure Bath Opera’s long‑term stability and artistic impact.
